What Is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? – Definition & Applications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a commonly used technology in all forms of digital applications – starting with advanced scientific operations, to everyday web browsing!

As technology becomes more portable and advanced, its usage is going to become even more commonplace in the future. At the same time, as AI usage in business operations increases, we see a surge in AI-related job opportunities across the industry.

Moreover, Artificial Intelligence is also a ripe field of research and many potential technological innovations are underway in the labs of different engineering institutes.

As AI usage proliferates and its adoption increases, we revisit the basics to see what artificial intelligence is all about.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the process of simulating human intelligence and performing tasks that are usually associated with humans. AI applications use large datasets to feed information into smart machines which can then be processed to make decisions.

Usually, Artificial Intelligence is categorized into 4 types. The categorization is based on the level of advancement that an AI system has been able to achieve.

We have given an overview of the 4 types of Artificial Intelligence below.

Reactive AI- Pre-programmed AI with no memory. Cannot adapt/ learn, only responds to different stimuli.

Examples of Reactive AI:  AlphaGo, developed by Deepmind Technologies – a subsidiary of Google.

Limited Memory: Has basic memory which can store information from the recent past and process it to improve the responses over time.

Examples of Limited Memory AI: Self-driving cars by Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet. Inc, the parent company of Google.

Theory Of Mind- It is a purely theoretical concept at this stage (with no real-life applications). It refers to an AI system’s ability to attribute mental states to self and other intelligent beings.

Examples: No practical applications have been discovered as yet.

Self-Aware- Highly intelligent systems that are aware of themselves and can perceive emotions, behaviors, and acumens of both humans and other systems.

Examples: Remember R2D2 from Star Wars? It is a great example of a self-aware AI-based robot.

Top 5 Applications Of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
1. Netflix’s Similarity Map

When you finish watching a show or movie on Netflix, you must have seen that Netflix automatically suggests a list of titles you can watch next. It is an AI-based technology that uses a program called ‘similarity map’. Netflix uses the metadata, summaries, and tags on movies to pitch similar movies to its user. This technology has revolutionized the user experience on Netflix and helped the platform to scale up massively in the last few years.

2. Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing refers to a machine’s ability to listen to human languages, process them, and take the appropriate action. It uses vast amounts of data related to language to reach that level of advancement. A common use of Natural Language Processing technologies can be found in smart assistants such as Siri and Alexa. A lot of developments in this field are taking place in different regional languages as well.

3. Industrial Robots

Industrial Robots have not found wide applicability in advanced manufacturing processes. They can perform tasks repetitively and with a greater degree of accuracy than human hands. Not only are they automated and programmed, but they can move around to perform a dynamic range of functions such as packaging, labeling, printed circuit boards, and assembling.

4. Conversation Making Bot

Conversation-making bots are increasingly used in web interfaces to give users a highly interactive experience while using web applications. It is easy to create and program and they can substitute human interactions to sort basic queries/ issues of users. This application of AI has completely transformed customer support initiatives and has made the load on human workers much lighter.

5. Facial Recognition Systems

Facial recognition systems are one of the most widely used technologies in digital devices that remember human faces as data points and can recognize them whenever required. A common usage of this technology can be found in the smart unlocking systems in laptops and mobiles. Many other security systems are also based on this technology, such as smart locks in doors, offices, and other protected areas.

Facts About Artificial Intelligence : Initially coined by John McCarthy in 1955, artificial intelligence is a machine that can solve problems that humans perform using natural intelligence
